Question 6

(a) Draw a sketch map of Nigeria
On the map show and name:

(i) three major irrigation farming areas
(ii) important rivers supplying water for irrigation
(iii) one important crop grown in any of the three areas

(b) Explain three factors that favour the development of irrigation agriculture.            

(c) Highlight three problems facing irrigation agriculture in the areas in 6(a)(i) above.

Observation

This question was not popular with the candidates because of the map work in 6(a) where they were required to draw a sketch map and insert the features. Many candidates’ lost marks because they could not properly insert the "irrigation fanning areas". The (b) part on "favourable factors for irrigation agriculture" was also poorly answered. The important points not mentioned include

- low rainfall which is unreliable (rainfall less than 75cm per annum)
-  very high temperature
-   high rate of evaporation
-  the need to produce food all year round.
