Write a geographical account of the Chad Basin under the following headings.

(a) relief and drainage:
(b) agriculture:
(c) problems of development

Observation

This question was not popular and those who attempted it scored very low marks. The expected answers are:
(a) Relief and Drainage
- made of sedimentary rocks
- low-lying area
- average elevation 45-69m
-  poorly drained region, rivers all drain into Lake Chad/inland drainage
- rivers include the Hadejia, Yedseram and Kamadugu Gana, Yobe
-  presence of sand dunes
-  rivers flow mainly north-east
      
(b) Problems of development
-   high temperature
-   draughts/shortage of water
-   swarms of flies, locusts, quella birds etc
-   desert encroachment
-   inadequate natural resources
-   unpredictable climate
-   far from southern market and sea ports
-   poor communication and transportation  network
-   seasonal flooding around the lake
-   soil erosion
-   low level of technology
-   inadequate capital
-   fierce winds and dust storms
-   scattered small settlements

(c)   Agriculture
- farming types: fishing, cattle rearing, arable farming, irrigation
- farming, market gardening, mixed farming, commercial farming.
- farming products: livestock, fish, food crops and millet and corn, cash products e.g. groundnut, hides and skin, milk etc.
-  pests and diseases as problem to agriculture
- drought/scanty rainfall as problem to agriculture
-  transportation problem on evacuation of agricultural products
- low-lying terrain as advantage to agricultural activities,
- lies within the savannah thus provides pasture for livestock.
