This question was very popular with the candidates. However, performance was only fair
in Section (a) on types of migration. The expected answers were:
(i) rural-urban migration
(ii) urban-rural migration
(iii) rural-rural migration
(iv) urban-urban migration
Quite a good number were able to mention the reasons for migration but their performance on the effects of migration on source and destination were poor. The candidates were expected to mention the following points.
(i) Effects of Migration on source region
- depopulation of the area/development of ghost towns reduction in labour force
- under-utilization of available resources
- transfer of ideals
- In-balance in population structure
- transfer of case
- low productivity/ low standard of living
- reduction of pressure on agricultural land
- reduction of pressure on social amenities.
(ii) Effects of migration on the destination
- high rate of unemployment
- pressure on social facilities
- congestion
- high crime rate/social vices
- overcrowding
- increase in government expenditure
- urban slum
- environmental degradation
- high cost of living
- increase in demands for goods and services
