Many candidates attempted this question and their performance was fairly good. Candidates' performance in part (a) was poor, but they did better in parts (b) and (c). The major problem in part (a) was mere listing of their points instead of giving full explanation to score maximum marks. Some candidates also missed out some of the vital points in their answers and scored low marks. They were expected to explain the conditions that favour fruit farming in the Mediterranean regions of Africa with the following points:
- temperature of about 25°C - 27°C;
- winter rainfall of 25 -75 cm for planting and growth;
- summer sunshine for ripening and harvesting;
- rich soil (volcanic in some places);
- sheltered valleys for cultivation;
- availability of rivers for irrigation;
- good transport network;
- high demand, internal and external;
- introduction of refrigerated vessels for fruit exportation;
- government support/encouragement in cash and kind;
- availability of capital;
- availability of technical know-how;
- use of advanced methods of cultivation e.g. terracing;
- undulating relief with good drainage.
