Many candidates attempted this question and their performance in it was poor.
In part (a) most of the candidates could not draw good outline maps and were not able to locate correctly, the given features on the map, and so lost some marks.
In part (b) some candidates did not write on any particular crop in part (a), as required by the question and were ignorant of the physical conditions necessary for the production of rubber.
The physical conditions necessary for the production of rubber are as follows:
- moderate temperature of above 27°C;
- heavy rainfall up to 250·cm..;
- even distribution of rainfall;
- deep soil;
- abundance of sunshine.
In part (c) some candidates wrote on the importance of food crops instead of cash crops and lost some marks. The candidates were expected to write on the importance of cash crops to the economy of Nigeria as follows:
- raw materials for industries;
- employment;
- revenue to government;
- income to fanners;
- growth of towns;
- development of infrastructure;
- foreign exchange earnings;
- promotes agricultural research;
- market for input e.g. fertilizers, herbicides, tractor, pesticides, etc.
