Candidates' weakness

Candidates' poor performance in the examination could be attributed to the following weaknesses that were observed in their scripts.

(1) Most of the candidates failed woefully in question one that required map reduction. Their knowledge of conversion of scale is too shallow.
The part requiring their describing the drainage of the map and the of identification of land use types was also poorly handled by the candidates.
This weakness could be overcome by preparing the candidates for map work at least one period in the week, beginning from SS 1, Much practice exercises should be given to student which should be marked by the teachers and appropriate corrections made.

(2) Question two on surveying was not popular with the candidates and many who answered it did guess work. Surveying is an important aspect of Geography which require great attention by the schools and tutorial canters. Appropriate equipments for practical surveys in school setting should be bought and used by he teachers to teach the students:

(3) Question six on identification of areas of the Mediterranean climate, was poorly handled by the candidates. They showed very little knowledge of the characteristics, the Mediterranean climate as well as the effects of Mediterranean on vegetation.
Teachers and candidates should put extra efforts to cover topics (In the mediterranean as well as other climatic and vegetation belts.

(4) Other general observation on the candidates’ papers included poor Preparation for the examination, grammatical and spelling  Mistake shallow explanation of points misunderstanding of point and poor measurement of map outlines.
All these problems could be overcome through serious and prompt preparations for the terminal examination, Improvement on the spoken and written English through frequent reading of textbooks and much carefulness to ensure that they clearly understand the demand of the questions before attempting to answer them.
