(a) Name two main areas of the Mediterranean climate
(b) Describe four characteristics of the Mediterranean climate
(c) Highlight three effects of climate on the Mediterranean vegetation.

Observation

This was an unpopular question with the candidates. Those who answered it showed ignorance on areas where Mediterranean climate dominate. Such areas include  

  1. Central Chile
  2. South-Western Australia
  3. Southern Australia
  4. California
  5. Greece, France, Spain
  6. North Africa-Libya, Tunisia and Morocco
  7. South western tip of South Africa ~ around Cape Town.

The characteristics of the Mediterranean climate include

  • Hot dry Summer and mild rainy winters
  • Temperature ranges between 21°c and 26oc
  • Summers are usually hot with high temperature of  about 26°c .
  • Winters are usually cold with temperature of about 10°c .
  • Rainfall is mostly in winter
  • Total annual rainfall is between 400-1000mm
  • There is heavy cloud cover in winter
  • Presence of local winds e.g. Sirocco and Mistral
