The poor performance of the candidates could be attributed to the weaknesses noticed in the candidates' scripts which included amongst others:
- Poor knowledge of map reading and interpretation of survey maps.
Most of the candidates could not identify the given physical features on thesurvey map and were poor in description of relief and the relationship between relief and settlement.
This weakness could be overcome if adequate attention is paid to the teaching of map work in schools by qualified Geography teachers. The teacher should teach the students the processes of map reading and interpretation and give them regular assignments on all aspects of map reading and interpretation.
- Another weakness noticed among the candidates was their poor performance in construction of statistical maps and diagrams. Construction of statistical maps and diagrams is a vital aspect of practical Geography which every Geography student should be familiar with.
Teachers should endeavour to teach students and give them regular exercises on drawing and interpretation of statistical maps and diagrams. Constant practice on this would enhance the candidates' performance.
- Some candidates gave one word answers and scored low marks. It is expected that in an essay paper candidates should give full explanations of their points. Candidates could perform better if they read standard textbooks, and their notebooks to expand their knowledge and give full explanations of points when answering essay questions.
- It was also observed that some candidates did not prepare adequately for the
examination hence, their poor performance. Candidates should cover all aspects of the syllabus and read extensively so that they will not be taken unawares by any question.
- Some candidates used tables to compare two given phenomena and lost some marks. In an essay paper candidates are expected to use comparative words while making comparison. Candidates should make use of such comparative words as while, whereas etc. For example, tall trees are found in the Tropical Rain-forest region whereas short trees are found in the Sudan Savannah region.
- Some candidates did not understand the requirements of some of the questions and so they wrote off point. Candidates should therefore spend the first few minutes in reading the questions to understand their requirements before answering them.
