Question 8

(a) Highlight four differences between the Tropical Grassland and the Temperate Grassland.
(b) Describe the climate associated with one of the vegetation belts in 8 (a) above.

Observation

Few candidates attempted this question and performed poorly in it. In part (a) the candidates exhibited poor knowledge of the Tropical grassland and the temperate grassland and could not highlight the differences between them adequate. Some even differentiated between them in tabular form and lost some marks. They were expected to present their differences as follows:
- Tropical grasslands are located between 5° and 200 north and south of the Equator while Temperate grasslands are located between 45o and 60o in the Northern hemisphere and between 25° and 40° in the Southern hemisphere.

-  Tropical grasslands are found in West Africa, East and Central Africa, North of Capricorn and South America while Temperate Grasslands are found in the heart of Asia, North America, South Africa, Argentina and in the Darling Plains of Australia.           

- In West Africa, Tropical grasslands are known as Savannah. In South Africa they are known as Lanos, Campos in Brazil whereas the Temperate grasslands are known as steppe in Asia, Prairies is North America, Veldt in South Africa, Pampas    in Argentina and the Downs in Australia,

- Tropical grasslands consist mainly of grasses and the heights vary from about 2 - 3 metres while Temperate grasslands are composed of very short grasses.

- Grasses in the Tropical grasslands are more compact while that of Temperate grasslands are generally sparse and often in discontinuous clumps.

-  The trees of the Tropical grasslands are many while in Temperate grasslands they are few and in some areas non-existent.

-  Trees in Tropical grasslands are about 10 - 20m tall or more, they are tall and scattered while in temperate grasslands they are shorter.

- The trees of the Tropical grasslands have long taproots while trees in the temperate grasslands have shorter roots.

- The grasses of the temperate grasslands are more nutritious to animals than those of the Tropical grassland.

- In the Tropical Grasslands, the popular trees are Acacia, baobab, Shea-butter while in Temperate grasslands, willows and alders are poplar.
