This question was popular among the candidates and their performance was good. Some candidates presented poor diagrams of the relief features of the Continental Shelf but did well on the importance of Continental Shelf to man. However, some candidates did not explain their points fully and so lost some marks.
Some candidates exhibited poor knowledge of the characteristics of the Continental Shelf. They were expected to present their answers with the following points:
- Gently sloping structure
- Borders the continents
- Continuation into the sea of the coastal plain
- Areas of shallow water
- Less than 250m deep
- Rich in plankton.
Most candidates attempted this question and performed well in it. Their presentation of answers was very good. They were familiar with the characteristics and modes of formation of sedimentary rocks.
