This was a compulsory question on map reading and interpretation of survey maps but some candidates did not attempt it. The performance of those who attempted it was poor.
In part (a) most of the candidates could not identify correctly, the giver features on the map. Some candidates did not even attempt it and went home with their maps instead of attaching them to their scripts.
In part (c) the candidates were poor in describing the influence of relief on settlement in the mapped area. They were expected to describe the influence of relief on settlement as follows:
- The area mapped shows dispersed settlement pattern due to the high relief of the area.
- Most settlements are located on the more gentle slopes south of the map.
- The more rugged (mountainous) areas, north west of the map attract less settlements.
- The only settlements in the North-west are Mayo Dongi and Kenchungu.
- Settlements avoid the steep slopes.
- Passes attract settlement location e.g. Kariahi.
