Question 2

If a and ß are the roots of 3x2 + 4x – 18 = 0, find the equations whose roots are a2 and ß2.

_____________________________________________________________________________________________________
Observation

This question was also well handled by the candidates. They showed that if a and ß are the roots of the equation 3x2 + 4x – 18 = 0, then (a + ß) =  -4/3 , aß =  - 6.
a2 + ß2  =  (a + b)2 - 2aß =  ( - 4/3 )2 + 12  =  124/9.  a2b2 = (ab)2 = -62 = 36.
Hence the new equation = 9x2 – 124x + 324 = 0
