Question 1

(a) Find the quadratic equation whose roots are (3 + 2 √3)  and (3 – 2√3).

  • If 27x+2  = 2432x-3, find the value of x.

This question was well attempted by majority of the candidates and they performed creditably well.  The (a) part of the question could be answered in two ways:

(1) By multiplying them out i.e   x – 3 – 2√3   x – 3 + 2√3 = 0 or
(2) Using the x2 – (sum of roots)x + products of roots method to get
                  x2 – 6x – 3  = 0

Observation

In the (b) part the candidates were able to express both sides of the equality in the same base and equated the power to get x = 3
