Question 1

(a)  What is a calorie?
(b) State four reasons for eating foods
(c) (i)  Name two nutrients that mainly provide energy

(ii)List three sources of each of the nutrients named in (i) above.

OBSERVATION

Candidates were only able to answer part (b) of this question which was the reasons for eating foods. The (a) and (c) parts of the question were wrongly answered by the candidates that attempted the question. They were unable to state calorie as a unit of measurement, majority of the candidates also listed all the nutrients as they could not identify the ones that mainly provide energy.

The candidates were expected to answer this question as follows:

Definition of Calorie

1. (a)  A calorie is the amount of heat required to raise the temperature
of one kilogram of water by one degree Celsius.

  (b) Reasons for eating foods

  1. to build up tissues
  2. to repair worn out tissues
  3. to provide energy
  4. to provide heat for warmth
  5. to maintain body processes
  6. to protect the body from diseases
  7. to satisfy hunger
  8. to stay alive
  9. to be healthy

 

(c)(i)   Nutrients Providing Mainly Energy

  • carbohydrates
  • fats and oil
