Question 1

(a)  (i) List two food sources of protein
(ii) Explain four uses of protein in the diet of a pregnant woman.
(b)  (i) List four food sources of calcium.
    (ii) State three functions of calcium in the diet.

OBSERVATION

The question was one of the candidates’ strenght. They attempted the question correctly. The candidates were able to give food sources, uses/functions of protein and calcium in the diet.
The answers to the question are as follows:
(a) (i) Food sources of protein: meat, poultry, beef, mutton, pork, fish, eggs, milk, cheese, beans, groundnuts, melon seeds, bread, fruits, whole grains, flying ants, caterpillars yoghurt.
(ii) Uses of protein in the diet of a pregnant woman.
- Promotion of growth of the foetus;
- Repair worn out tissues of the pregnant woman;
- Serve as source of energy when excess of protein is consumed;
- Build enzymes to catalyse chemical reactions in her body;
- Building hormones that assit in the regulation of her body processes;
- Build antibodies that fight against infections and diseases;
- Responsible for the transmission of hereditary characteristics for parent to the foetus;
- Form major structural components of the cells.

(b) (i) Food sources of Calcium
- Milk and milk products – yoghurts, cheese
- Green scafty vegetables;
- Sea foods – crabs, sardines, snails, periwinkles, crayfish, oysters, fish
- Soft/biscuit bones
- Dried pulses
- Fruits – coconuts, cherries, peach, banana, pineapple, raisins, grape fruit, lime, lemon, oranges.

(ii) Functions of calcuim
- Development of strong bones and healthy teeth;
- Controls cell activities;
- Essential for blood clotting;
- Effective functioning of nerves/ ensure nerve transmission;
- Rhythmic heart beat
- Aids normal functioning of muscles.
