Question 6

(a) . State the function of the
(i) capacitor (C);
(ii) R.F. choke.
(b ) . State the expression, for the frequency of oscillation.

OBSERVATION

The expected answers were:
(a) The oscillator's 'biaS network' comprised ofR{ and ~2 while the d.c.
(Q-point) stabilization netWork includes RE and CE. ..' .
(b) i The 'capacitor labened 'C' functions to complete the positive feedback
path to the transistor.
The choke' decouples a.c. signals from. the output, andconsequently:ensures that'they do not affect the Qutput.
(c) The required expression isfOlC

This question was on a BJT based Coplitt's oscillator. The questioI11~as'popular. However., candidates' perfo~ances were inadequate.
The bias network was mainly RI and R2. The d.c. (Q-point),stabi1ization network includes RE and CE while capacit9,r C functions to complete the" positive feedback path to the transistor's base.

A few candidates failed to know that 'RF choke' decouples a.c. signals from the output, and coqsequently ensures that they do not affect the output, and although some gave the correct expression for frequency of oscillation.
