Question 1

(a). Draw and label a block diagram of a p - n junction under forward bias condition.

(b) Explain the principle of operation of the blOck diagram in (a).

OBSERVATION

The expected answers were:

(b») With the battery connected as shown in the illustration, electrons in the N- layer and holes in the P-layer are accelerated by the potential difference towards the junction, where they recombine. This flow of charge carriers
(current flow) is maintained by the majority charge Carriers to bring a large current flow about.
This question was on semiconductor devices. A PN junction has: a battery ,positive terminal connected to its p. and negative to N. It was quite popular. Candidates' performances were fairly adequate. .

In part (b), most of the candidates got the fact that majority carriers were forced across the junction by the potential difference established when its value is higher than the device's Potential barrier.
