Question 1

  1. Copy tables 1A  and  1B  into your answer booklet.
  2. Use the colour bands to determine the values of R1, R2 and R3.
  3. Record the values of the resistors in (b) in table 1A.
  4. Connect the circuit as shown in figure 1.
  5. Ask the supervisor to check the circuit connection.
  6. Use multimeter to measure the values of resistance between
  1. AB;
  2. BC;
  3. CD;
  4. AD.

(g) Record the values of the resistance measured in (f) in table 1B.
(h) Close switch S.

  1. Use multimeter to measure voltage across R1, R2 and R3 and record the values in table 1B.

(j) Open switch S.
(k) Complete tables 1A and 1B.
(l) Compare the value of R1 +  R2  +  R3  with RAD and comment on the results.
(m) Compare the sum of the voltages across R1, R2 and R3 with the supply voltage and comment on the results.
State the circuit law which verifies experiment 1.

OBSERVATION

This question was to demonstrate the use of multimeter as a voltmeter and an ohmmeter.  It further required candidates to identify colour bands, measure resistance and voltages, compare corresponding results with comments and identify the relevant circuit law.

The poor usage of measuring instrument affected majority of the candidates, with the computations dependent on the wrong values got from the measured quantities.
