The poor performance of the candidates could be attributed to some weaknesses noticeable in their scripts. These included:
(l) Lack of basic mathematical skills to tackle the questions in the Data
Response Section.
(2) Disobedience of the rubrics.
(3) Mere listing of points without proper explanations.
(4) Outright misinterpretation of some of the questions.
(5) Inability to draw and label relevant diagrams properly.
(6) Inadequate coverage of the syllabus.
Candidates' performance could improve if some of the following measures are taken:
Candidates should take mathematics more seriously as it would enable them perform better in Economics. Candidates should endeavour to show all workings in their calculations to score high marks.
Candidates should study the rubrics and adhere strictly to them.
Candidates should improve on their ability to communicate in order to develop their points logically with examples where necessary.
To avoid misinterpreting questions, candidates should spend the first five minutes going through the question paper. This will enable them to understand the actual requirements of the questions.
Candidates should devote enough time to practising the construction of diagrams before the examination.
Teachers should at all times endeavour to cover every aspect of the syllabus before the examination. This would enhance the confidence of candidates.
