(a) Candidates’ Weaknesses
The following weaknesses were observed in candidates’ scripts:
(i) Inadequate coverage of the recommended examination syllabus e.g. they avoided question 7 which was on economic grouping , question 9(a) which was on sea port etc.
(ii) Lack of sound knowledge and the language of the subject, which resulted in the inability of the candidates to express their points clearly.
(iii) Inability of the candidates to attempt questions that involve comparison and application e.g. question 4 was avoided while only a few attempted question 6. Some candidates attempted more than one question on the same page which suggests that such candidates did not go through the rubrics.
(iv) Candidates performed very poorly in questions involving application e.g.
Question 9b on Importance of transport to Commerce.
SUGGESTED REMEDIES
(1) The schools should employ qualified teachers to teach Commerce. Such teachers should have Bachelor degree in Business Education, Business Administration and Accounting
(2) The candidates should endeavour to cover the syllabus in good time so as to have enough time for revision.
(3) The students should be made to be actively involved in teaching and learning (class activities) by :
(i) doing assignments and practise on exercises in the subject.
(ii) participating in class work.
(4) The candidates/students should be taught fundamentals of English Language by qualified teachers so as to improve on their power of expression. They should also learn the language of the subject.
(5) The teachers should emphasise the meaning and difference between state, list, discuss and explain. Candidates should be taught examination techniques.
