(a)         Explain three ways in which the texture of fabrics can affect the wearer.
(b)        State four general rules of the removal of stain.
(c)        List three types of stain

OBSERVATION

Majority of the candidates attempted this question. They performed well in (b) and (c) but misinterpreted the question on the effect of texture of fabric on the wearer

The expected answers are:

(a) the effect of texture on fabric on the water.

- Rough texture makes fabric appear bulkier thus giving an illusion of increase in size.
- Stiff fabrics make a person appear larger.
- Transparent fabrics reveal the outline of a figure
- Clinging textured fabrics drape thus showing the outline of a figure.
- Soft flowing fabrics drape well on a figure and give an effect of slimness.
- Shiny fabrics give an illusion of increase in size.

(b) General rules for removing stains

- Treat a stain as quickly as possible
- Always start with mild treatment.
- Do not rob the stain into the fabric.
- Consider the type of fabric before choosing a stain removing agent and method. .
- Test on an invisible part of the fabric before applying any stain removal.
- Apply any liquid stain removal from the outside towards the stain to prevent formation of rings.
- on washable fabrics a fresh stain can usually be removed by washing with a normal household washing powder
- If stain removal is to be applied to al small area only, place this over a piece of absorbent material.
- Any stain removal, other than solvents which will evaporate, should be removed by thorough rinsing,
- Identify the stain and choose the correct stain removal.
- Wash the stained portion before washing the whole garment.
(a) Stains and methods of removal
- Bloodstain: soak in cold water, rob well to remove the Stain. Wash with soapless detergent, rinse thoroughly and dry.
- Milk: soak in cold water to remove the albumen. Wash in hot soapy water and rinse.
- Egg: scrape slightly with blunt knife to remove the yolk and albumen. Soak in cold water to soften then, wash in hot soapy water
- Grass stain:, wash fresh grass stain. in soapy water. . . Tea, coffee and cocoa beverages (stains). Pour hot water over the area. Wash quickly in soapy water.
- Chewing gum: sponge with carbon tetra chloride after scraping off. Wash in hot soapy water.
- Grease/oil: dab stain. with kerosene and wash in warm soapy water
- Lipstick: remove stain with methylated spirit and wash in warm soapy water.
