This question was not specific weather candidates should write or describe all the nine points on how to work buttonholes. So, many candidates stopped at three
The expected answers are:
(a) Types of fastenings
- Eyelet holes and strings/cord/ribbon.
- Hooks and eyes.
- Hooks and bars
- Press studs/fasteners.
- Velero.
- Frogs.
- Tapes/ribbon
- Zip.
- Snap fasteners.
- Covered bottons.
(b) Description of hand worked buttonhole
- Mark length and position of buttonhole
- Make small running stitches round the position indicated.
- Cut buttonhole and start working buttonhole stitch from the end furthest from opening.
- Bring needle through the slit to just below the running stitch.
- Work evenly to the opposite end.
- The knots of the stitches must lie on the raw edge of the slit
- Work round the end without knots, (or work over 1;ewing stitches), . fanning the stitches round.
- There should be 5,7 or 9 stitches, the middle one being ill line with the buttonhole.
- Work buttonhole stitches along the other side.
- Hold ends together and work buttonhole stitches at right angles to those along the sides.
