Question 1

(a) State the characteristics of fabrics made from a blend of cotton and wool
(b) Explain the following terms and their affects on cotton fabrics.
(i) Sizing
(ii) Truberizing
(iii) Mercerizing
(b) State three quantities of linen that make it suitable for tailored garments.

OBSERVATION

This question was not popular with the candidates. Many candidates failed this number. Attention should be drawn to this part of the scheme.

The expected answers are:

1. (a) characteristics of fabrics made from a blend of cotton and wool
- warmer to the touch
- easier to launder than wool alone
- there is reduction in shrinkage
_ - crease resistant - less expensive - less bulky.

(b) Explanation of the following terms and their effect

(i) Sizing
It is a finishing treatment given to cotton fabric whereby the fabric is immersed in a starch solution. It gives a stiff and smooth finish; It improves the feel of the fabric.
(ii) Trubernizing
It is a finish treatment given to cotton fabric whereby it is treated with resin. It makes it permanently stiffened.
(iii) Mercerizing
It is a finish given to cotton fabrics. The fabric is passed through a strong solution off caustic soda. This makes the fabric strong, lustrous, smooth and durable.
(c) Qualities of linen that make it suitable for tailored garments
(i) . Firm to handle.
(ii) Can be embroidered and decorated
(iii) Retains good shape when cut accurately
(iv) Linen fabrics are strong and wear well.
(v) They do not stain easily.
