:      (a)    What is care label?

( b)    Draw the symbols for the following:         
             (i)        hot iron;
            (ii)       do not iron
            (iii)       hand wash
            (iv)       chlorine bleach
  ( c)     State two guidelines for  sewing each of the following fabrics
          (i)             Cotton                      
            (ii)        Polyester.
(d)      Describe how to remove the following fresh stains.         
             (i)       Chocolate

                (ii)          Biro pen ink

Observation

This question which is on practical knowledge was not very popular with the candidates. They could not give the guidelines for sewing. The expected answers are as follows:
(a)     Meaning of care label
         It is a tag attached to a garment/an article, which gives information on         fibre content and how to launder it.
            (b)        Symbols for the following
                        (i)         hot iron

( e)          Guidelines for sewing

                (i)        Cotton
  -             pre-shrink cotton before cutting and sewing;
  -             cut fabric with a sharp pair of scissors;
  -             use cotton or mercerized cotton thread;
  -             use the correct size of needle according to the weight of the fabric;
  -             use correct seam depending on weight of fabric or article being made.
                (ii)       Polyester
                 -         polyester frays, therefore give good seam allowance               -         cut with very sharp scissors
                 -         use fine steel pins and needles
                 -         use polyester/nylon thread
                 -         use correct seam depending on weight of fabric.

(d)            Brief description on how to remove the following fresh stains

               (ii)          Chocolate

                                      - remove or scrape off any deposit on surface of the article
- wash in hot soapy water
- rinse and dry
(ii)          Biro pen ink
                       - Dab the stain with methylated spirit
- Wash in warm soapy water
- Rinse and dry.
