Question 3

(a) Explain the following terms used in Clothing & Textiles
(i) fibre;
(ii) printing;
(IIi)fabric finishes.

(b) State three reasons why dacron is used for making clothes.

(c) In a tabular form identify three differences between linen and    woollen fabrics.

Observation

This textile question was not properly answered by majority of the candidates. Many did not give the properties of dacron which was required in 3 (c). The expected answers are as follows:

(a)        Explanation of the following terms
(i) Fibre - is a thin strand of material with characteristics that allow it to be made into fabric.        

                  OR
Fibre is a tiny hair-like structure which serves as raw materials for the production of fabrics. It is twisted into yarns and woven into fabrics.
                   OR                    
Fibre is the basic unit of fabrics.

(ii)Printing - it is the process of applying design and decorations to a fabric;
 (ii)Fabric finishes - these are special treatment given to fabrics to improve their functions, appearance, aesthetics and service qualities/durability.
(b)        Reasons why Dacron is used for making clothes
(1)    it is light in weight
(2)    drapes well
(3)    crease resistant
(4)    dries quickly
(5)    easy to launder
(6)    less expensive
(7)    it is hardwearing
(8)    it can be neat when set into permanent pleat.

(c)   Difference between linen and woollen  fabrics
