This question was attempted by majority of the candidates and the performance was good.
In question (a)(i), most candidates were able to correctly list four pieces of apparatus that could be used for the determination of heat of neutralization from among the following: thermometer, calorimeter, stirrer, retort stand with clamped burette or pipette.
In question (a)(ii), candidates correctly listed two gases that cannot be collected over water from the following: ammonia; hydrogen chloride; sulphur(IV) oxide, chlorine and stated that they could not be collected over water because they are soluble in it.
In question (b)(i), majority of the candidates stated that the purple colour of KMnO4 was decolorized when SO2 is passed through it.
In question (b)(ii), candidates correctly stated two observations that could be made when CuSO4 .5H2O crystals are heated in a dry test tube.
The required answers from candidates were as follows:
- blue colour turns whitish
- crystalline appearance changes to grey/whitish residue
- droplets of colourless liquid form at the mouth of the test-tube.
In question (c)(i)-(iii), candidates correctly gave the colour of freshly prepared FeSO4(aq), and K2Cr2O7(aq) and Br2 as pale/light green, yellow or orange and brown and yellowish brown respectively.
In question (d), candidates correctly stated that Zn(NO3)2 would produce brown gas on heating and that NH4 Cl would sublime on heating
