The candidates' responses showed poor knowledge of fundamental principles and procedures. They lost marks due to the following reasons:
- Non adherence to rubrics.
- Lack of understanding of the requirements/demands of the questions
- Omission/wrong use of units
- Averaging non-concordant titre values
- Cancellation of table of titre values
- Alteration of titre values to agree with supervisors
- Lack of mathematical/manipulative skills
- Failure to express numerical answers in the appropriate number of significant Figures
-Rampant spelling mistakes;
- Inability to draw logical inferences from observations made on prescribed tests
- Inability to assign correct charges on ions
- Poor knowledge of the concept of solubility and dilution factor
- Poor practical exposure.
The following were however suggested as remedies to the weaknesses:
- Exposure of candidates to more laboratory practices from the first year of senior secondary school
- Government/School authorities should adequately equip the chemistry laboratory to make it more functional to both the teachers and students
- Teachers should be encouraged to attend seminars/training/refresher courses/conferences to update their knowledge
- School authorities should stock their libraries with up to date text book
- Candidates should adequately prepare for examination.
