Question 6

(a) State the name of the apparatus used for
(i) drying solid substances;
(ii) measuring varying volume of solution accurately in the laboratory. [2 marks]
(b) Three sample tubes separately contain solid samples of NaCl, NaHCO3 and NaCO3
  How would you identify the solids using the following chemical test: .
(i) action of heat;
(ii) addition of HN03(aq) followed by AgN03(aq)?
Only few candidates attempted this question and the performance was poor. [12 marks]

OBSERVATION

 In a(i), many of the candidate wrote "desiccator" which is an apparatus for keeping dry
  solid substance instead of oven hence lost the mark for the question.
In a (ii), majority of the candidates wrote 'measuring cylinder' instead of burette and .lost the mark for the question.
However, candidates correctly answered (b)(i) and (ii).
