Question 5

Credit will be given for strict adherence to the instructions. For observations precisely recorded and for accurate inference. All tests, observations and inferences must be clearly entered in your answer book, in ink, at the time they are made.

F is a solution of a simple salt.

Carry out the following exercises on F. Record your observations and identify any gas(es) evolved. State conclusion you draw from the result of each test.

Divide the solution into four portions.

(a) To the first portion add NaOH(aq) in drops and then in excess.
(b) To the second portion add NH3 in drops and then in excess.
(c) To the third portion add dilute HCI.
(d) To the fourth portion add BaCl2(aq) followed by dilute HCI in excess.    [15 marks]

OBSERVATION

Some candidates attempted the question and the performance was fair.

In (a), candidates correctly observed white precipitate on addition of NaOH(aq) in drops and then in excess to a portion solution F. However, some of them lost the mark because they wrote 'colourless solution' instead.
In (b), most candidates observed white precipitate which IS insoluble in excess NH3(aq) and inferred Pb2+ or AI3+.
In (c), candidates observed no visible reaction when dilute HCI was added to a portion of solution F, confirming AI3+.
In (d), most candidates observed white precipitate when BaC12 was added to solution F followed by excess HCI. The precipitate was however insoluble confirming SO42-. However, some candidates lost marks because they wrote"SO4-" instead
