question 5

Matt 1: 18-25

(a) Describe the announcement of the birth of
Jesus as recorded by Matthew.
(b) In what ways does this differ from Luke's account?

_____________________________________________________________________________________________________
OBSERVATION

The few candidates who answered Matthew's account of the annunciation, confused it with Luke's account. Many candidates did not write well; they muddled issues especially in the 'b' part of the question. The differences between the account of Matthew and Luke are:
(1) In Luke, Angel Gabriel spoke to Mary but in Matthew, an unnamed Angel spoke to Joseph in a dream.
(2) In Matthew, Joseph was considered as divorcing Mary whereas there was no such fact in Luke.
(3) The birth of Jesus Christ according to Matthew was a fulfilment of Old Testament prophecy, but Luke made no reference to it.
(4) Luke made reference to Elizabeth to convince many that with God everything was possible, but no such references in Matthew.
