However, many candidates failed to:
-give reasons why it is essential to set out a building correctly;
-state the type of timbering suitable for the various given soil conditions.
The expected response to question 2 is as given below:
2(a) It is essential to set-out a building correctly before construction works commence due to the following reasons:
To ensure that the building faces the right direction:
To make sure the building is erected on and within the correct plot of land.
To ensure the overall size,spaces and shape are according to those shown on the drawings;
To make sure local building regulations regarding set-back are observed;
To avoid the additional cost of removing work that would be required to amend any error detected at later stage.
(b) (i) Open timbering using poling boards and struts only.
(ii) Open timbering using poling waling and struts
(iii) close timbering or sheeting
(c) Advantages of pre – cast concrete over cast in-situ concrete are:
- It does not require elaborate formwork for on-site works:
- Construction work may not be interrupted by bad weather (i.e during rainy season);
- There is less risk of reinforcement being displaced during site work;
- High quality concrete is ensured as adequate compaction and better finish are possible;
- There is speed in construction.
