The following weaknesses were observed among the candidates.
- Poor spelling of technical terms and one word answers;
- Poor naming of labeled parts;
- Drawing of wrong view of specimen;
- Inability to describe the produce for testing starch in leaves;
- Inability to state similarities between specimens;
- Using of plural instead of singular words to indicate parts with a single guide line
- Inability to correctly identify the porter;
- Poor knowledge of ecology.
The following remedies were proffered to overcome these weaknesses;
- Teachers and pupils should devote adequate time and effort to prepare for examinations;
- Teachers should endeavour to complete the syllabus before examinations begin;
- Biology teachers should conduct spelling drills to help candidates brush up in their spelling of technical terms and one word answers;
- Teachers should expose candidates to more practical lessons especially in the area of ecology to familiarize them with ecological terms and equipment;
- Government should ensure that extra schools that cater for external candidates have appropriate science laboratory facilities.
