(ii) Give two reasons each to support your identification of C and D. [4 marks]

(b) (i)    State three observable differences  between C and D.  [3 marks]

(ii) Give three similarities between C and D. [3 marks]

(iii) Name the structures labeled I to VI in C. [3 marks]

(c) State the functions of the parts labelled I and III in C. [2 marks]

OBSERVATION

The candidates performed fairly in this question.  They could properly identify the structures as plant and animal cells and could give reasons for their identification namely large central vacuole, presence of chloroplast for the plant cell and presence of any food vacuoles for the animal cell amongst others.

Most candidates could also state differences and similarities between the two cells and name the parts of the plant cell with the exception of few candidates who lost marks due to spelling errors.  The main weakness of candidates who answered this question was their inability to state the functions of the parts labelled I and III namely the chloroplast and the cell wall.

Expected answer include:

Functions of I/Chloroplast and III/Cell wall

I  -   Absorbs/traps sunlight for photosynthesis/manufacture of food.

III -  Gives support/rigidity/shape/protection to the cell.
