(a) Use line diagram to sketch the crankshaft of a four cylinder in-line engine

(b) On the sketch, indicate the
(i) Main bearing journal;
(ii) Crank pin
(iii) Crank wed.

(c) (i) If a camshaft sprocket has 28 teeth how many teeth would be on the crankshaft sprocket?
(iii) Give reason for your answer in c(i) above.

OBSERVATION

This was a question on engine crankshaft for a four-cylinder, in-line engine and really attracted most of the candidates. A line diagram was required to reduce the time on sketching but some of the candidates who attempted it did not use line diagram thus spending more time in sketching it. They were awarded the full marks on presenting correct and proportional sketches and labelling. In part c of the question, most of the candidates mistook the crankshaft gear for camshaft and got 56 instead of 14. They multiplied 28 by 2 instead of dividing 28 by 2 .
