Candidates were required to identify the type of gearbox and name five parts labelled M, N, P, Q and R. Most of the candidates could not identify it correctly. Incorrect answers such as 4-speed gearbox, 2-speed gearbox, constant mesh and synchromesh boxes were stated. The type of gearbox shown is 3-speed, sliding mesh gearbox. Some candidates could not name the parts
labelled M, N, P, Q, and R. . . .
M is spigot, clutch, first-motion: primary or input shaft and not output as stated by some candidates. N is the output or main shaft, P is the lay or counter shaft, Q is the idler shaft. And R is the constant-mesh wheels or gears.
Part c of the question was on gear ratio. Most of the candidates forgot the formula for gear
ratio.
Gear ratio = No of teeth on driven wheel x No of teeth on driven wheel
No of teeth on driver wheel x No of teeth on driver wheel
40 x 30
20 30 = 2:1
Most ,of the candidates stated the function of a clutch such as it ensures gradual take off, easy gear change etc.' The correct answers are:
it increases the engine torque;
it provides permanent neutral position and
it provides a means of reversing the vehicle.
