(a)(i) Sketch an air-cooled engine
(ii) Label any four of its parts.

(b) State three advantages of the air-cooled engine over the water-cooled type.

Observation

The question required candidates to use sketch to describe an air-cooled engine. Candidates were expected to show those features that distinguish air-cooled engine from water-cooled engine. Most candidates failed this question primarily because of their deficiency in freehand drawing, or knowledge of technical drawing.

(c)Advantage of air-cool engine:

(i)It is simple in construction
(ii)It is lighter in weight.
(iii)Quick engine warming up from cold.
(iv)The engine can operate at a higher temperature than a water-cool engine.
(v)It is free from leakage problem
(vi)There is no risk of damage due to freezing of the coolant in cold in cold weather.
