This is a question on vehicle layout. Candidates were expected to know different arrangements or layouts used in motor vehicle technology and the advantages of each arrangement. A large number of the candidates answered the question and some of them did very well. However some mentioned rear engine front wheel drive, a system that is not in existence at all.
- familiarise themselves with various Units of the motor/vehicles and practice simple sketches involving these units;
- were taught on the use of sketches in illustrating building processes;
- were exposed to the various scales used for producing building drawings.
The correct answers are:
1.(a)Types of motor vehicle arrangement based on the position of the engine and drive are:
-front engine, rear wheel drive (conventional drive);
-front engine, front wheel drive;
-rear engine, rear wheel drive;
-front engine, four wheel drive.
(b)Merits of:
(i)Front engine, rear wheel drive:
- fairly even load distribution to each road wheel.
- It is easy to remove its main components.
- It has simple type of universal joint. .
- It has lower cost of repairs (workmanship).
(ii)Front engine, front wheel drive.
-lower floor gives good cornering and low car gives small air resistance.
-car may be of shorter length.
-flat floor since there is no propeller shaft tunnel and gearbox protrusions.
-there is better grip of the road and good cornering.
(iii)Rear engine, rear wheel drive:
-it has compact layout and usually short
-large load on driving wheels gives good grip
-simpler drive shaft layout than front wheel drive (fluid)
-fumes and heat are behind the passengers
-mechanical noise is carried away from the passenger.
(iv)Front engine, four-wheel drive.
(i)It has better road holding.
(ii)Can be used on rough road.
(iii)The weight is evenly distributed.
(iv)A broken shaft does not cause a total delay, as the other could be out to use in emergency.
(v)Wheel lock-up is reduced during braking.
(c)(i)The type of chassis is unit construction; integral, mono construction . chassis less frame .
(ii)It gives low center of gravity
(iii)It is lighter in weight
(iv)It is more rigid.
(v)Damaged parts can be easily welded.
(vi)It is simple in construction.
