question 3

(a) Draw and label a d.c. shunt generator circuit.                              ...
(b)A d.c. shunt generator connected across a 250v supply delivers an output current of 500 A. if the armature resistance is 0.06Ω and the field

resistance is 50Ω, calculate the generated e.m.f.

observation

The expected· answers were:

Fieldwinding               (shunt winding)

(b)        Shunt current   =    terminal voltage
                            Shunt field resistance

                                      =  250  = 5 A
                            50
Load current IL   =  Ia - Ish

Armature voltage, Ia  =  IL +  Ish

                       = 500 + 5

                       = 505A

          Armature voltage, Va  =  IaRa

                         = 505 x 0.06
                     = 30.3V
:. Generated emf = terminal voltage + amature voltage
                             = 250 + 30.3
                         =280.3V
This question was on direct current machine. This question was popular. The candidates' performance was fair
.

Many candidates drew a labelled circuit but could not properly appropriate     formulae to Compute the required quantities under application.
