This question was popular with the candidate and their performance was well above average. In question 1 (a), majority of the candidate were able to list the contributions of science and technology to the development of agriculture in 'West Africa.
However, in questions 1(b), and l(c), many candidates could neither state the, effects of communal land tenure system on agriculture nor suggest ways of improving upon the
communal land tenure system.

Effects of Communal Land Tenure System
It leads to fragmentation of land
- The small parcels of land are too small for scale farming or mechanized agriculture Because land does not belong absolutely to the individual, it cannot be used as security for loans from banks
- No permanent improvement can be made on the small plots of land which do not absolutely belong to individuals
- It is forbidden for holders to plant permanent tree crops which take a long time to mature
- Because the net holdings are small, they are usually over cultivated with no' room for
- bush fallowing
- Foreigners are not allowed access to the land to farm
- Easy access to land, by members of the community for agricultural production
- It may lead to conflict among members of the community resulting in low agricultural production -
Ways of improving upon the Communal Land Tenure System
- Formation of co-operative unions on the basis of land holding
- Government acquisition of communal land for re-allocation to interested farmers
Educate the People to loan the land to farmers who will make effective use of it
