Question 2

Study the diagrams below and use them to answer questions 2(a) to (c).

 

(a) Identify the equipment illustrated by diagrams D, E, F and G are generally used.  [4 mark]
(b)  State the farm operation for which the equipment illustrated by diagrams D, E, F and G are generally used.  [1 mark]
(c) Enumerate two specific uses of each of the equipment, illustrated by diagrams F and G [4 mark]
(d) State six general ways of maintaining the equipment illustrated by diagrams F and G.  [6 marks]

OBSERVATION

This question was not popular with the candidates.  In question 2(a), majority of the candidates could not identify the equipment represented by the diagrams.  Also, in questions 2(b) and (c), many candidates could not state the farm operation for which the equipment are generally used and the uses of the equipment F (Prismatic Compass) and G(Theodolite).

In question 2(d), only a few candidates could state ways of maintaining equipment F (Prismatic Compass) and G (Theodolite).
The correct answers include:

Identification of equipment D to G.

D -  Gunter’s chain
E  -  Cross staff
F  -  Prismatic compass
G -  Theodolite.

Farm operation for which the equipment are generally used
- They are all survey equipment or used for farm surveying.

Uses of the equipment F and G

F (Prismatic Compass)

  • Assisting in locating base line or places
  • Taking direction with reference to the magnetic meridian

G (Theodolite)
-  Measuring horizontal and vertical angles
- Triangulation in chain survey of plane
-  Rectangular coordinates for location of points
-  Location or sighting of station

Ways of maintaining equipment F and G

  • clean or wash and dry properly as appropriate after use;
  • grease/oil the necessary parts;
  • after use, ensure that the screws, bolts and nuts are properly secured;
  • protect the equipment from getting wet particularly specimen G;
  • use the equipment according to manufacturer’s instructions;
  • after use and cleaning store in cool dry place;
  • keep the prismatic compass away from magnetic field
